be aware that Sony uses its own version of the Windows OS...which carries along its own set of headaches...

a friend of mine used to have a Sony Vaio and had a horrible time with it... things that worked flawlessly on my machine (titanium g4) were no where close to reliable on his machine... we spent countless hours trouble shooting his technical issues... since then he has acquired a mac G4 PB.... and the difference is night and day...

this is just my personal experience but I thought I would share...

Hi everyone,

I was wandering if anyone had any advice about the hardware side of
running Max/MSP. I'm looking to upgrade my Powerbook almost exclusively
in order to be able to run more stuff in Max/MSP. I currently have an
old style 15" 1GHz powerbook with 1GB of RAM. I'd either be looking to
get a new 1.67GHz Powerbook or a Vaio VGN A397XP 2GHz Pentium M.

After asking around and looking at other forums on the net, it seems
that in practice there may not be so much difference between the
machines, but as I have no experience of Max/MSP in Windows I'm unsure
as to how it compares performance wise to running it on a Mac. I've
heard rumors that in terms of coding Max/MSP is better 'optimised' for
a Mac, although I find it difficult myself to distinguish where this
kind of talk stops being factual and enters into the realm of
misinformation.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Sam Britton
